Dr. Alex Marrero has led Denver Public Schools, Colorado’s largest district, since 2021, overseeing nearly 90,000 students, 15,000 staff, and a $1.45 billion budget. The son of a Cuban refugee and a Dominican immigrant, Dr. Marrero advocates for equity and excellence in education.
Under his leadership, DPS has achieved record-high graduation rates, increased proficiency, and implemented its first equity-based strategic plan. He improved employee wages, enhanced school safety, and helped 24 schools exit the State Accountability Clock. Initiatives like the Latine Education Advisory Council, International Educators Institute, and six Community Hubs have strengthened family engagement and community support.
In 2024, Dr. Marrero led the passage of a $1 billion bond proposal, earning 75% voter approval—the largest and most supported in DPS history. Recognized nationally, he was named District Administration's Superintendent of the Year, a Top 100 Influencer in Education, and a “Superintendent to Watch.”
Dr. Marrero serves as President of ALAS, an Executive Board Member of CGCS, and an appointee to federal and state councils. He holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and several post-doctoral certificates as well as adjunct professorships at leading universities, reflecting his lifelong commitment to empowering diverse learners.
